External Light Interference (ELI) Function

PAL-HIKARi is equipped with an ELI function to detect external light that may interfere when measuring outside while fruit are still growing on the tree. When external lights are detected, it will display “nnn”.

2 Easy Ways to Measure

Hold the unit in your hand and press its sensor against the fruit or place the fruit on the sensor. At the push of a button, it will begin taking measurements. Whichever the way you prefer, a buzzing sound will let you know when it is done taking measurements.

Avoid Gaps!

Make sure that the sample stage has a good contact with the fruit. If they are apart, it won’t take good measurements.

Avoid Broad Daylight!

Let the fruit and instrument adjust to the temperature of your environment. Avoid broad daytime in which temperatures may vary significantly.

Avoid External Light!

When using it outdoors, turn your back against the sun to avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

PAL-HIKARi: Principles of Measurement

What is PAL-HIKARi?

This is an instrument that measures Brix by shining light on the fruit. This graph shows the measurement correlation made between the PAL-HIKARi and refractometer.

Q&A

Q Do I need to prepare fruit in a certain way?

A No prepping needed. Measurements can be taken without cutting, filtering or juicing fruit.

Q Does peel color affect measurements?

A No, it does not.

Q How do I care and store?

A Dry the sponge cushions completely. If you plan on storing it for extended period of time, we recommend that you remove the batteries.

Q Can I measure fruit that are still on the trees?

A Fruit can be measured while they are on the trees. Carefully position the cushioned against its surface while making sure the fruit does not fall off the tree.

Q The measurement varies even when the same sample is measured.

A Brix (sweetness) may vary from one spot to another depending on sun exposure and how sugar is stored. This instrument measures the Brix of a section where the sample stage is placed against.

Q Which fruit can it measure?

A PAL-HIKARi is specific to each fruit. Please see the product lineup here.

Q I would like to measure jam and other processed food. Which one should I get?

A We have the Pocket Refractometer (PAL-0) or sets with Pocket Brix/Acidity meters.

Q How do I calibrate?

A PAL-HIKARi is designed in a way that it does not require calibration.
